The holidays are here, and for the next several weeks we will be tempted by all sorts of treats. Many of us will wait until January to start a weight-loss plan, thinking that waiting allows us to enjoy those treats without guilt. But, waiting has its own price: adding more pounds to lose when we finally do get started. In addition, when someone has the mindset that “this is the last time I’ll get to have a slice of pecan pie”, that can actually encourage overeating. Have you ever said to yourself, “I just want to enjoy one last….cookie, glass of wine, chocolate bar, and then tomorrow I’ll stop”? When you woke up that next day, did you stop? This time, go into the holidays with a different thought. Have a few of the things you look forward to each year; don’t deny yourself. But at the same time, don’t tell yourself you’ll never have that treat again and don’t over indulge. Be thoughtful about what you treat yourself with during these holiday celebrations. When you come out of the holiday tunnel with perhaps the same amount to lose that you have today, but not those extra 5-7 pounds you would have added during the season, you’ll be glad you did.
